Location –  

The easternmost island of the Caribbean, Barbados is 21 miles (34km) long and 14 miles (22km) wide. To the west, beaches are made of fine white sand and there are natural coral reefs. Along the east coast there is a lively surf as the sea pounds the more rocky Atlantic shoreline. Barbados is predominantly flat with only a few gently rolling hills to the north. The coral structure of the island acts as a natural filter and the waters of Barbados are amongst the purest in the world.

Weather –

Average temperature is 80°F (27°C) and the warm sunshine is moderated by a steady North East Trade wind. Rain comes in quick showers and more frequently during 'rainy' season from June through November.

Getting around –

It is possible to get almost anywhere on the island using public buses. If you wish to rent a car it is possible however there are none of the major car rental companies that we are familiar with in North America. Taxis are also a good option for getting from one place to another. Taxis have a ‘Z’ on the license plate and usually a ‘taxi’ sign on the roof. They’re easy to find and often wait at the side of the road in popular tourist areas. You may have to haggle when it comes to the price since taxis are generally not metered. When you have a package booked with a tour operator your transfers to and from the airport are included. It is recommended to book tours through your hotel or tour operator.

Currency –

The official currency is the Barbados Dollar however USD are widely accepted in tourist areas.

Language spoken –

The official language is English. Local Bajan dialect is also spoken.

Electricity –

Barbados has the same voltage standard as in North America so if you are travelling from Europe a convertor will be needed.

Like other Caribbean destinations there are more water sports than you would ever be able to enjoy in a week. Fishing is also a popular excursion. Other options such as swimming with turtles, eco and nature tours, historical and cultural tours as well as bike and scooter rentals are sure to keep you as busy as you want to be. Shopping –.

Duty free shopping is especially popular, with prices typically being 30 to 50% less than in Europe and North America. High end products can be readily found in the shopping districts. Broad Street in the capital city of Bridgetown is the most popular with department stores as well as specialty shops. Pelican Village which is on the outskirts of Bridgetown offers more of a straw market feel where you can purchase local handicrafts. There are also many options outside of Bridgetown for you to explore.

Nightlife –

When the sun goes down take your pick of a romantic cruise, clubs, bars or dinner shows. Nightclubs are mainly located in St Lawrence Gap and along Bay Street.

Golf –

Sunny weather all year long makes Barbados an ideal golfing destination with many professional courses. Before travelling research which course will be closest to your hotel or which you would like to travel to and try to pre-book your tee-times to avoid disappointment.
